Read the rest of this entry »

Melopia returns!

Dec 18, 2008

Blog design

Initial blog design

Hey, what’s up? Melopia, after a two-year “break”, was back on Dec. 18th, 2008. It’s a long story and I would really love to tell you more. But for now, let me just mention that First news: Phonetica Latinae has been moved to http://la.raycui.com (Downloadable here) , and I’ll come back to edit this post later on… after dinner at least...

Hm… where to begin… alright, then, why Melopia was down for two years then? Actually, the old melopia was hosted on a private server, which was purchased by 30 members of WuYou Jiaoben(care-free scripting), a designing forum in China, for which I was a moderator(I think I still am, but haven’t fulfilled the responsibility for quite some time). Unfortunately, a webmaster amongst us forgot to moderate his site(ain’t that happens a lot!), allowing comments with sensitive content to stay. The server was taken away by the police(yes, they do that) and it was said that each of use need to pay big money to retrive it.

After some struggling, we consented that it might not worth doing so. Melopia, therefore, ceased to continue, and I lost my domain name melop.net after paying to this guy who promised buying it for me… yeah right…

GRE Analytical Writing Issue 121 & Argument 219

Aug 08, 2008

TOPIC: ISSUE121 – “At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species.”

WORDS: 584 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-8-8 11:33:06

The above notion that there is no justification for human to make extraordinary efforts to save endangered species because natural extinction in the geological past prevailed is misleading. Because it overlooks the cause and grave consequences of abnormal acceleration of extinction speed.

To start with, contemporary biodiversity is achieved by evolution by means of mutation, sexual isolation, natural selection and speciation. Each species we see today is the product of millions of coincidences and competitive rivals. For instance, life itself can be treated as the greatest miracle of all. The fortunate position of our earth in the universe is too lucky a coincidence, since it allows the existence of liquid water. According to physicians, if the distance from the sun is moved farther for about 1%, the water will become ice, forbiding the genesis of life forms we see today. Evolution is also a process full of opportune factors. For instance, if large reptiles such as dinosaurs did not go to extinction 65 million years ago, primitive mammals would not gain an ecological niche on which species diversification is based. The “butterfly effect” may as well be responsible for the radiation or declination of many lineages. For example, if a gene allie exists only in a small portion within a population, it might be more likely to be decimated in an accident. The phenomenon is known as genetic drift. If we figuratively compare evolution as a race, all species today are winners in the past. Solely due to this intrinsic value should all our neighbours be saluted, respected and protected.

Many people try to refute the justification of species conservation by what is know as background extinction. Indeed, extinction existed, exists and will continue to exist in evolution. As a matter of fact, it is a crucial mechanism with which natural selection screens off inadaptable species. Nevertheless, such extinction happens in a very low speed even if 99.9% of the species once existed on earth have now dissappeared, because geological time is usually measured in million years. Because the process is gradual, it minimizes sudden impact to the ecosystem and food net, ensuring other species depending on an extincting species would have time to look for solution. It contrasts contemporary extinction events caused by human activity, which is characterized by a brief period of decimation and deterioration of the associated environment. The Dodos on Mauritius are good lessons. When the Portugues first landed, they found the population of this relative of dove to be abundant while they are easy to kill. In less than 50 years, which is a time frame omitable compared with geological time, the dodos were hunt to extinct. A tree species depending on dodo for deseminating their seeds became endangered because no seedlings can be produced.

Last but not the least, apart from ethical reasons, human should see the potential benefit of conserving biodiversity. Many new medicines are being developed from organisms, including new chemicals and novel genes. Many animals and plants bear genes with potential powerful economic value, for instance, antiseptic effect. With the extinction, these genes might never be discovered and utilized by our offspring.

To conclude, biodiversity is formed through evolution by means of natural selection during a geological time, it has the right to evolve by natural forces. Human is responsible for the extaordinary increase of extinction rate, which is not parallel to the background extinction. Protecting biodiversity is protecting the sustainbility of our species. Therefore they money will be well spent in the protection projects.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT219 – The following appeared in a memorandum from a vice president of the Megamart department store chain.

“For the third year in a row, the average household income in our country has risen significantly. That prosperity means that families are likely to be spending more time and money on leisure activities. Megamart stores should therefore concentrate on enlarging and promoting its line of products typically used in leisure activities: athletic and outdoor equipment, televisions, gourmet cooking equipment, and luggage and accessories.”

WORDS: 459 TIME: 00:30:00 DATE: 2008-8-8 11:33:06

The memo cited some information on the trend of economic prosperity and concluded that the product line on leisure should be enlarged and promoted to gain benefits. Nevertheless, the discussion was suffered from the lack of substantiate data and several logical fallacies.

To start with, only the average household income was stated raised, but other characteristics of the sample such as the medium and deviation are not given. As we know, the raise of average might be contributed by an overall salary increase for all members of the society, or it can only be attributed to the raise in high-end families. It could even be the case that income decreases for the major part of low-income families. Therefore, we may be deceived by the average data. Besides, although the author claimed the data was for “our country”, but the exact procedure for selection was not stated, not to mention locales involved. It is plausible that the figures would vary from cities to towns. The trend was observed for the last three years, but it could be helpful if the author offer prediction of the future income. After all the business decision will come into effect later on.

Secondly, the raise of household income doesn’t necessarily mean prosperity, we should also consider the inflation of prices. For example, prices of many goods were much cheaper years ago, but the income was lower too. We need to see the relative increase of income excluded the inflation factor. Even if more free money is available to most families, whether they will spend more time and money on leisure activities is doubtable. The reason is that people tend to be busier when the economy prospers, especially when employment rate goes up, people may be more concentrated on their occupation. A well designed survey on how do they prefer spending money on leisure life should be conducted to evaluate this trend.

Last but not the least, even if they do spend more money on leisure activity, it is hard to define leisure products. Whether the products listed, such as athletic and outdoor equipment, are considered to be welcome should be demonstrated by a survey. Some other products were not mentioned, for example, electronic accessories like iPod, mp4 and playstation. On the other hand, whether the profit can be boosted if the stores enlarge and promte the leisure product line is not certain. If the stores arranges promotions, it will need to spend more costs which may decrease the profit. The contribution of non-leisure related products to the income of stores is not evaluated and contrasted with the sale of leisure related ones. It is possible that people would be willing to pay more for goods they need to use everyday rather than leisure goods.

GRE Analytical Writing Issue 227 & Argument 41

Aug 06, 2008

TOPIC: ISSUE227 – “To remain vigorous, any academic field needs to be led by truly independent thinkers who are willing to ignore established boundaries and challenge long-standing assumptions.”

WORDS: 447 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-8-6 11:13:03

I consent with the notion in that to remain vigorous, any academic field needs truly independent thinkers who are willing to challenge established boundaries and long-standing assumptions, nevertheless in reality they would experience a long time of ignorance from the academic society before being accepted by his peers and becoming leaders of the field.

To start with, revolutionary theories aren’t usually based on the discoveries of new phenomena, but the way a person perceive them being different from one’s predeccesors. Established assumptions have usually weathered a long and vigorous validation process before they became axiomatic, hence they can often explain phenomena so well that most conformists couldn’t detect the defect in it. As a result, such preliminary but long-held axioms usually become the greatest impede for innovation. For instance, the classical physical axioms of Newton assumed that time is always a constant regardless of the state of an object. It explained cotidiant phenomena very well because no object that people see in their lives moves in a tremendous velocity. Nevertheless, it was until Albert Einstein, who questioned the most fundamental prerequisite of classical physics, that the view of relativity of time emerged. If Eistein failed to challenged the stereotype of constancy of time, he wouldn’t be able to proceed in the research of relativity in the first place.

Some may argue that erecting a seemingly exorbitant new theory may cause dispute within the field. What’s worse, if the direction of the idea is erraneous, it will mislead other researchres. Nevertheless, it is through critises and defending that a new theory grows mature and perfect by withstanding harsh testings. When Darwin published his famous book “the Origin of Species”, many scientists in the field found the theory to be implausible, not to mention the jocular comments from the public laughing at the idea that human evolved from monkey. On ther other hand, however, even opponents of a theory may help to validate it, as long as the idea is true. When more and more evidences are accumulated in biology, main-stream biologists nowaday have to agree in some part, if not wholely, with Darwin’s opinion.

Last but not the least, when we look back in the scientific history, every significant leap forward was brought about by abnegation of the archaic views. As mentioned above, the theory of relativity and evolution, together with other greatest discoveries like land drifting, solar-center, blood circulation proved this claim. The independent thinkers, Einstein, Darwin, Corpernicus etc., should be attributed to these contributions.

To conclude, since only the revolutionalists can bring significant impact into an academic discipline, it needs to be led by such individuals who are truly valorous to stand up against the old.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT41 – The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of a food-distribution company with food-storage warehouses in several cities.

“Recently we signed a contract with The Fly-Away Pest-Control Company to provide pest-control services at our fast-food warehouse in Palm City, but last month we discovered that over $20,000 worth of food there had been destroyed by pest damage. Meanwhile, the Buzzoff Pest-Control Company, which we have used for many years, continued to service our warehouse in Wintervale, and last month only $10,000 worth of the food stored there had been destroyed by pest damage. Even though the price charged by Fly-Away is considerably lower, our best means of saving money is to return to Buzzoff Company for all our pest-control services.”

WORDS: 446 TIME: 00:30:00 DATE: 2008-8-6 11:13:03

In the above memo, the author claimed that in order to save money, the company should return to Buzzoff Pestcontrol because the food damage seems to be graver in the warehouse tended by Fly-Away. Nevertheless, this claim was weaken by insufficient of data and several logical fallacies.

To start with, the percentage of food being destroyed by pest in Palm city was not clearly stated. We are only informed of the absolute loss in currency, but not in the amount of food. A possibility exists that average price for the damaged food is higher than in Wintervale. It is until we see the percentage of damage amount and food types can we make sure the relative loss. On the other hand, only the data for one month was presented, making us unsure of the long-term performance of the pest-controlling company.

The author offered some data from the Wintervale warehouse, tended by Buzzoff. The money lost being $10,000 seems to be fewer, but what about the exact amount of food being destroyed? Similarly, if the food are of low price, then few loss in money may result even if the destruction is large. Therefore, the respective percentages of each type of pest-damaged goods should be listed in detail for further analyses. If in case that Buzzoff are less competent in controlling amount of food being destroyed, it would be devastating to let it manage Palm city warehouse, since the foods stored there may have higher values. Parallel to the problem mentioned for Palm city, only last month was mentioned as evidence. However, long-term performance may be more important in judging the ability of the pest control company.

Thirdly, the varius differences between the two cities should be taken into consideration. For instance, the climate such as humitidy might affect the population of pests. It is possible that weather in Palm city is more favorable for pests, which makes control work intrinsically harder than Wintervale. What’s more, the species of pests weren’t mentioned but are important since destructive ability and food preference vary from species to species. It is possible that more species with greater appetite are found in Palm city than Wintervale.

Last but not the least, lower price doesn’t mean bad service. It is unfair to compare the two companies solely based on service charge and the money loss surveyed in one month. When summer comes, for example, pests may prevail in Wintervale that food damage there will increase regardless of what company to hire. Since the price is lower for Fly-away, it may be a good idea to keep evaluating it for a longer time and consider factors mentioned above before hasting to the decision.

GRE Analytical Writing Issue 106 & Argument 115

Aug 05, 2008

TOPIC: ISSUE106 – “All students should be required to take at least one course in ethics, even if taking the course means a decreased emphasis on academic subjects.”

WORDS: 552 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-8-5 11:04:42

I agree with the above notion in that all students should be required to take at least one course in ethics, however, instead of affecting the emphasis on academic subjects, ethical education is essential for the studies of these subjects.

To start with, ethics of a person determine how he would utilizes knowledge. An individual lacking ethics but equiped with knowledge is parallel to terrorists with decimating nuclear weapons. There is no benevolent or malevolent knowledge per se, it is the psychological state of its owner that decides the outcome of academic ideas. According to the information of some governments, terrorist organizations often hire scientists with great intellectual ability to manufacture bacteria weapons. While there is no way to underrestimate their expertise in academic subjects such as microbiology, immunology and pathotology, we can safely assume that these misanthrophic workers lack ethics accomodating the common value of mankind. Another example came to mind was a case happened several years ago, in which a university professor in inorganic chemistry took advantage of his expertise to manufacture drugs in his laboratory. As a matter of fact, the most severe threads to social peace are usually initiated by erudites without moral standards.

Further more, good ethics are the prerequisite for good scientific research, which constitute the foundation of any academic subjects. Scientists, especially those prestige ones, once suffer from decline of ethics will mislead peers in his discipline and exert negative impact on the society. Fabrication of data and palgirism are two of the most common indicators for such a decline in moral standard. Not long ago, a prestige Korean biologist admitted the fabrication of data regarding stem cell propagation. The incident had not only deprived his personal honor, but also caused dissappointment within the scientific world and the Korean society.

On the other hand, some may argue that through the compulsory coursework in ethics, students are deprived with their freewill to perceive the world to formulate their own values. It could have been true if our species don’t live within a society, in which members are required to conform with common rules and abide to general values in order to sustain the stability of it, and it could have been true if informations sending out from disparate sources are ubiquintously positive. However, students with few social experiences may be misled by mass media, bad friends and cynical or extreme ideas. For instance, the mass media sometimes construct teenage figures with excessive individualism, whom the real-world students may look up to as rolemodels.

Hence, the purpose of education is not only to prepare students with adequate knowledge in different specializations, but also to equip them with ethics required to be become qualified members of the society. Schools are places to cultivate productive citizens, it is hard to imagine the ethical level of our society to gain a substantial increase when educators remain just beholders. Ethics coursworks on the other hand, usually don’t take up much time as academic subjects. Instead, they can actually be instilled in other subjects by giving examples in the relevant subject.

To conclude, given the importance of ethics in maintaining the long-term prosperity of the human world, educational institutions should try their best to guide students by providing relevant coursworks, despite the fact that goodwill can also be generated in personal experiences.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT115 – The following appeared in a clothing industry trade journal in the country of Sartoria.

“A popular fashion magazine recently conducted a survey of consumers’ opinions about clothing prices, using prepaid mailing envelopes. Eighty-nine percent of the approximately 20,000 respondents reported that they were either “dissatisfied” or “very dissatisfied” with current clothing prices. The large number of responses indicates that the Sartorian clothing industry is at risk. Given the survey results, clothing manufacturers must find a way to reduce prices in order to keep their existing customers and maintain their businesses.”

WORDS: 424 TIME: 00:30:00 DATE: 2008-8-5 11:04:42

The above passage argues that the clothing manufacturers in Sartoria should reduce prices to maintain customers. The argument was based upon a survey which was not clearly defined, and it is weaken by the lack of further persuasive data and several logical fallacies.

To start with, the selection procedure of the consumer samples was not clearly stated. Their gender, age and income are all essential factors to their feelings of clothing price. Commonsense tells us that, women, especially youths, have more expensive tastes on clothing than men. The average income of the chosen sample may be around a low range. What’s more, prepaid mailing envolopes don’t necessarily ensure responses from potential interviewees, the proportion of responders should be stated to allow readers know how well this sample can represent the total.

Secondly, “dissatisfied” or “very dissatisfied” aren’t quantitative measurements but very subjective, it would help to understand the degree by seeing a survey on the psychologically acceptable prices of consumers. Further more, within many clothing catagories, the specific sort of clothing they found the price excessive was not mentioned. As discussed above, customers might only be unsatisfied with current prices of fashionable clothing such as suits and dresses, but are satisfied with prices of products such as underware, T-shirts, jeans and jackets.

Thirdly, the place of this survey was not mentioned. If it was not conducted at Sartoria, we may cannot be sure of the same feelings can be found in Sartoria. One may argue that Sartoria sells products to other places instead of selling them locally, in that case, there isn’t any evidence indicating consumers mentioned in the survey are the most important target-customers of Sartorian clothing industry. Hence, it could be the case that in other towns or cities, people with higher income wouldn’t find the price unacceptable.

Fourthly, whether the business is at risk should be reflected in revenue data instead of depending on only one survey. It would strengthen the claim if data show that inventories to the surveyed area decreased significantly.

Last but not the least, reducing price may not necessarily save the industry but to deteriorate it if the quality is sacrificed as a result. Existing customers may no longer choose Sartorian factories as suppliers once they find out the products are of less durability. Further more, the sale may decrease in the regions where people have higher purchase power because they might consider prices as indicators for quality.

To sum up, more extensive and scientific survey should be carried out before hasting to decide the price reduction.

GRE Analytical Writing Issue 146 & Argument 213

Aug 04, 2008

TOPIC: ISSUE146 – “People who are the most deeply committed to an idea or policy are the most critical of it.”

WORDS: 480 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-8-4 11:09:31

I agree with the above notion that people who are the most deeply committed to an idea or policy are the most critical of it. Appeared to be paradoxic, the notion is valid in that only those who truely care for an idea would spend enormous amount of effort to scrutinize it, defend it and perfect it.

To start with, effective critics can only base on thorough understanding of a problem. A layman’s idea on an issue is usually hampered by lack of basic knowledge in a field, rendering it less insightful and of less value. For instance, when people discuss the potential value and disavantages of transgenetic crops, the discussion often turns into a irrational dispute of moral values among those who know little about the details of the technology. The discussion would not remain at the surface if it is carried out within a group of scientists studying transgenetic plants, because through their experiments they saw with their own eyes and are persuaded with self-collected data by not only the benefits of these crops but also their potential defects. More specifically, only a biologist who has first-hand data on the antiseptic and biotoxic effect initiated by a specific gene can comment on its vantages and disavantages over the control groups. In order to maintain a scientific idea, a supportor of it will usually be very careful and strict about his experiment procedures and analyses, in order to ensure it can’t be facilely attacked by others. In the peer-reviewing procedure for most scientific journals, for example, papers are handed over to several anonymous experts in the field for comments. Authors of the paper might be experts themselves, thus it is not unusual to encounter frustration that the paper is rejected because the referees from a different field misunderstood genuine reasoning or question unreasonably.

It leads to another reason why insiders are more eager and competent to critizise their own theories, since in the process of defending, previously ignored flaws can be easier detected by the person who is most familiar with the problem. Take peer-review as an example again, when referees can often express their concern on a problem but the possible solutions are usually very ambiguous. That means, people who are unfamiliar with the field might be able to spot the direction for improvement, but cannot provide more concrete suggestions. To the contrary, authors are frequently very sensitive to the accuses, and can design better experiments to prove the claims in a relatively prompt manner.

With the passion and belief in an idea, motivation to improve can be initiated. It is hard to imagine that a insouciant person would scrutinize the problem deeply which leads to effective critics. To conclude, in order to strengthen the idea upheld by someone, he must gain profound knowledge on the problem and improve it by the process of repeating criticism and defending.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT213 – The following appeared in a memorandum from the owner of Armchair Video, a chain of video rental stores

“Because of declining profits, we must reduce operating expenses at Armchair Video’s ten video rental stores. Raising prices is not a good option, since we are famous for our special bargains. Instead, we should reduce our operating hours. Last month our store in downtown Marston reduced its hours by closing at 6:00 P.M. rather than 9:00 P.M. and reduced its overall inventory by no longer stocking any film released more than two years ago. Since we have received very few customer complaints about these new policies, we should now adopt them at all other Armchair Video stores as our best strategies for improving profits.”

WORDS: 476 TIME: 00:30:00 DATE: 2008-8-4 11:09:31

In the memo, the owner claimed that in order to stop the decline of profits, the train video rental store should immitate the one in downtown Marston to change closing time from 9:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.. Nevertheless, his reasoning is hampered by lack of substantial data and several logical fallacies.

To start with, there may be more than one way to increase profits other than
reducing operating expenses. For example, arrange an advertisement campaign.

Secondly, being famous for special bargains doesn’t mean the prices cannot be raised. There are many ways to conceal a hidden raise from the customer, for example, offering plans that appear to be good bargain but indeed the average price is raised. As a result, the flame for good bargains of the store won’t necessarily be harmed.

Thirdly, a quantitive measurement of the efficace of saving money and increasing profits by reduction of operating hours was not demonstrated. Other measures might play a more important role in the operating fees, such as salary of staffs.

Fourthly, other time periods were not tested other than the early close at 6 P.M.. It could be the case that when closed at daytime and open only in the evening, sales don’t drop significantly while operating expenses are saved.

What’s more, few customer complaints don’t automatically mean they are satisfied with the service. As we know, many customers may simple not chose Armchair again when they find the shop to be closed after 6:00 P.M.. On the other hand, the cutting of its overall inventory by no longer offering films released mroe than two years ago may have decreased the sale. We may guess that people coming to renting stores prefer to see older films rather than new ones which they can see in the cinema. The sale of the store at Marston may have in fact decreased. It is necessary to see detailed income data and renting record of this store from last months and before so that we may evaluate the preference of customers. It is only when we see a substantial increase of profits can we see the tactics of reducing open time and inventory are really working.

Last but not the least, the trial was carried out in only one store during a very short period of time. As a result, even if profits were increased in this store last month, there is no way guarantee the same profit can be maintained later on, not to mention whether it can be confidently applied to other stores. Hence, we need to analyze other factors, for example, the locality of Marston might be more adaptable for early close because people tend to stay home after 6:00 P.M., but in other neighborhoods, people might prefer coming out as late as 9:00, so setting an universal time schedule for all shops might be potentially harmful.
