Feb 08, 2009Got an offer email from Texas A&M University on feb. 3rd in the Ph.D. program in Ecology & Evolutionary biology. I guess it will be the program I’ll be with in the next 5 or 6 years.
Prior to the interview on Jan. 31th, I looked into the school’s website for information of its traditions, discovering a rich background of this institution. Although none of those were mentioned during the interview, except for the “Howdy”, I am already deeply attracted by the spirit of the 12th man and the atmosphere of mutual support.
em… just now I noticed WordPress greets with “Howdy” too, does the author come from Texas?
Dunno what more to write, period.
张敬轩“酷爱”发音有误抑或地道？
Jan 04, 2009想起张敬轩，早在我高中的时候就已经听说他了。那时候他才刚刚出道，凭借一首《断点》让沉寂已久的广东乐坛又唤起了一丝生机。记得我们的英语老师姚 饼干还说他们团委组织的一个活动也让Hins去唱了。很显然，当时咱姚老师还当人家是个懵懂中学生，不太看得起的语气。后来上新东方，教阅读的那位仁兄又 声称自己是Hins的同级同学，不过据说是杜撰的。。。
当时就很奇怪，为什么Hins写歌没用粤语填词呢？原因恐怕有很多，除了粤语填词难度较大以外，广州地区的粤语歌曲市场之萎缩可能也是因素之一。广 州音现在作为粤语权威音的地位正在快速下降，而让位于香港。所以可能当时考虑到市场的广泛度，就推了普通话填词的歌曲。实际上，广东乐坛从来就没有真正地 把“广东”体现出来。脍炙人口的广东作品：弯弯的月亮（嘻嘻，晒一个，其作者的儿子是我高中同学，坐在我前头）、晚秋、不要问我太阳有多高 等曲首次发行时全部都以普通话填词，后来只是引入到香港后再有了粤语版本。
可能正是没有了粤语的母语教育，导致轩仔这位广州土生土长的歌手唱起粤语歌来反而把一些生活中少见的字唱错了。在其目前最红的一首歌《酷爱》（光今 天就无意中听了三次！一次早上听到，第二次在车上，第三次在刚才的超级无敌估歌仔里）中有这么一句歌词：“贪高兴狠心敷衍一下…”。其中敷衍的“衍” 在重复出现的几段里全部被唱成了 “hin2 显”。我听听下觉得奇怪，还以为自己一直都读错了，马上翻查字典。实际上无论是倾向于实际发音的《广州音字典》还是尊重传统读音的《广州话正音字典》都只 记录了 “jin2 演”一个音，证明我的经验是对的。然后再查粤语配词审音网，发现的确有记录hin2这个俗读音（张显群先生提供）。我走去问我老豆，他竟然也说读 hin2。看来 hin2这个俗读音还是有一定的市场。不过既然连《广州音字典》这本收集了很多俗读音的资料都没有收录此音，可能说明其使用还不太广泛。所以这个音还是唱 jin2 比较好。衍读 h 声母可能是受字形与“行 hang4”类似而导致的。
此外还有另一首歌《满江红》（岳飞），Hins把“潇潇雨歇”的“歇”唱成了 kit3，明显是错了。这个字读 hit3。由于以“曷”字为声符的另一个字“竭”与“歇” 在上古相通，意义相近，所以受到前者读音影响，Hins把后者也照读成 kit3。但这是不符合广州话传统音的。另外一个字“蝎”也是有类似的问题，本来读 hit3，但很多人读了kit3。但“蝎”字由于读kit3的人很多，现在kit3音也作为俗读音处理，不算错误。
从前去过某楼盘，听到那些年轻的sales讲“毛胚”做“ mou pei ”，我的父母就读传统音“mou pui”，对比极为强烈。那个sales好像还想纠正我父母的发音一样，重读她那个pei音。可见缺失了母语教育的广州人现在的语音正逐步向普通话靠近。 我已经不止一次听到有人把“垂” 读成 ceoi，而不是 seoi，把“随便”的随读成 seoi而不是ceoi。就连 G4 的陈Sir 都经常读错，更何况是普罗大众呢。

Recording Canton on Winter Festival

It is the Winter festival today. Astrologically, it’s the day with the longest night of the year. A television program called G4 of the Guangzhou Tv channel organized a campaign to record the fast-changing, fast-losing and fast-renovating city with photographs.
The G4 program(perhaps acronym for “Guangzhou channel four”) is hosted by a mid-age guy Mr. TSAN Yeung, who is by now arguably the most famous and beloved tv host in Canton.
Canton – an ancient city having an history of 2222 years – had once been the only port in China that opened to the west. Due to a relative stable and isolated environment, the Cantonese people had developed their unique culture in cuisine, language and characteristics amongst others. Endowed with its geographical advantage(neighboring Hongkong, having convenient access to the ocean), Canton was the among the southern cities that experienced the door-opening policy in the late 1980s. Since then, numerous people flooded in from the north, in seek of opportunities of “Fa cai”(to be rich). A large part of this special group, formerly called “Min Gong”(peasant workers) and now known as “Wailai Wugong Renyuan”(alien individuals seeking jobs), had settled down in the city. According to a recent census, its number takes up to around 50% of the total permanent residences in Canton. Accompanied by the drastic speed of development, traditional Cantonese architectures are being torn down to yield space for the World-class buildings(as you will see in this picture).
The most upsetting thing is that you can barely hear standard Cantonese(no lazy sounds, with proper Canton vocabulary) among the younger generation. Subconsciously, the schools are instilling values to the students that their mother tongue is somewhat “inferior” and “uncivilized”. But I will go back to that topic later.
For now, let’s just enjoy the great visual impact brought by modern technologies, while realizing the pain being suffered because of the loss of tradition.

Resolving encoding issues in WordPress instaslled by Fantastico
Dec 20, 2008Web hosting with Lunarpages came with Fantastico, which includes the latest WordPress out of box. It went well until I tried to compose entries in Chinese today, which turned into question marks. Obviously an encoding glich was there to prevent WordPress from saving UTF-8 chars even if I had set WP’s encoding into UTF-8. After performing checks for a little bit, I found that the Latin encoding would persist even if you try to alter the default encoding of the datatables after installation. Therefore, I had to open PhpMyAdmin and correct the “COLLATE” of EACH FIELD manually back to “utf8-general-ci”. The ‘DB_COLLATE’ variable was set to the same value in wp-config.
The following SQL expressions will alter the DEFAULT COLLATE of all the tables in my database, but not the existing collate for each field.
Done.
使 sIFR 3 安守其职而不替换中文标题
如果大家看过这个博客，可能已经发现博客的各个标题都用了非标准字体。这种效果是使用 sIFR 3 脚本来实现的。其主要原理就是利用Flash文件可以内嵌自定义字体来自动将页面中的特定文字自动替代（大家在英文标题上右键看看。。。）。诚然对于西方语言来说，要内嵌字体是很容易实现的。对于英文来说就只有26个字母，即使包含大小写、粗体、斜体和粗斜体等变体，文件也不会太大（几个kB ~ 十几kB）。对于其它使用拼音文字的语言来说情况也类似，都能将下载Swf 文件控制在适于网络传输的范围内。然而对于方块字来说就不太现实了。无论怎样压缩，做出来的swf文件都是1MB以上。
由于我的Blog上既有外文条目，也有中文。那有没有什么方法可以让sIFR 3 不处理中文条目呢？开始我想通过设置Flash 里头的css变量font-family，将后备字体列上，希望flash能自动调用本机系统上头的字体。可惜flash 不买账。最后就逼着我改点东东了。
下面是两个判别标题是否含有中文的函数：
基本原理就是穷举标题中的每个字符，并判断其ASCII码，要是大于一个数，那就基本判别是中文了（当然还有其他别的什么乱七八糟的字符）。其中第一个函数是用于截取筛选sIFR 3 核心函数 replace() 里头的节点的。
